FUTURE LARGE-SCALE SYSTEMS: WILL WE BE ABLE TO USE THEM ?

The scale and complexity of computing systems increases constantly, offering High-Performance-Computing (HPC) like infrastructures for general purpose computing and desktop machines. Already the speed of hardware progress has overtaken software development and modern systems offer features that cannot be properly exploited anymore - particularly the Operating Systems are lagging behind this development with their monolithic structures. The S(o)OS project funded by the European Commission investigates into new Operating System architectures to address these issues.
